The civil engineering community and construction sectors are witnessing implausible transformation primarily driven by the evolutions and advancements in the smart technologies, new materials, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Remarkable construction topographies were seen up to recent years as a dream, yet they became achievable and reality in smart cities and modern societies. Structures of various styles and rises have been assembled and planned with exceptional features empowering the concepts of sustainability, energy efficiency, recycled materials, environmental impact, 3D printing, and smart structures. This paper compiles and highlights the accomplished progress relevant to the aforesaidsignificant aspects in contemporary construction practices aiming for crafting a vibrant future research direction pertinent to this booming field. Fundamental information and notable findings are presented herein regarding geopolymer concrete and alkali-activated binders, recycling of demolition wastes, 3D printed structures/elements, harmonization between smart technologies and sustainability, utilization of the internet of things (IoT) in structural monitoring, smart structures, and life cycle cost assessments. This work informs researchers, engineers, and industry professionals about the benefits and challenges of using 3D printing, machine learning, and digital technologies, which highlights future prospects to support the development of more efficient built environments.
