Does screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy prevent sudden death in young competitive athletes?

Screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy before participation in competitive sports
Sudden deathhard clinical
Screening and disqualification of affected young competitive athletes may prevent sudden death, despite hypertrophic cardiomyopathy being an uncommon cause of mortality in this group.
The results show that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was an uncommon cause of death in these young competitive athletes and suggest that the identification and disqualification of affected athletes at screening before participation in competitive sports may have prevented sudden death.
