This paper has studied the multipronged effect of the development of e-commerce on physical brick-and-mortar-based retail businesses, both as difficulties and as opportunities that arose in the previous decade. On a mixed-methods basis, 450 conventional retailers from diverse industry sectors were selected for research, utilising developed structured surveys and financial performance analysis. The study employed various statistical methods, including regression, correlation, and ANOVA, to examine the relationships between e-commerce adoption, changes in customer behaviour, and business performance. Findings showed that conventional stores suffered huge setbacks that encompassed declining foot traffic (average loss of 32.4%), declining profit margins (average loss of 18.7%), and rising operational expenses due to digitalising the operations. Nevertheless, retailers that managed to implement an omnichannel strategy fully had higher customer retention rates (the average growth was 24.3%) and revenues (the average increase was 15.8%). The research has shown that the success of adaptation is strongly affected by the size of the business organisation, the industry it deals with and the geographical location. The results indicate that e-commerce poses significant disturbances to more conventional retailing frameworks. Still, it is possible to develop competitive advantages by strategically adapting to the world of digital commerce through integrated flanking with dynamic customer experience and exceptionally new services. The study contributes to solving the current retail environment and provides practical knowledge to conventional retailers interested in evolving to digital change.
