Generative AI has potential benefits but also risks if used in education. This study evaluates the efficacy of generative AI in improving academic performance and engagement of 209 university students via a questionnaire. Results partially supported benefits but also highlighted negative impacts on learning outcomes. While performance expectancy positively influenced adoption, effectiveness evaluation was negatively correlated.A multifaceted guidelines framework addressing technological, pedagogical and ethical considerations is proposed for optimal integration of generative AI in higher education.
