Abstract We propose a numerical approximation scheme for dynamic response of a Kirchhoff‐Love plate resting on a generalized Winkler‐type viscoelastic foundation, which is characterized by means of the fractional calculus. We derive error estimates of the numerical scheme, and then conduct extensive numerical simulations of practical scenarios to demonstrate the application of the proposed model in describing the dynamic response of the Kirchhoff‐Love plate under complex external load.
