Abstract BACKGROUND: In Ayurvedic literature, the concept of Srotas is pivotal for understanding physiological and pathological mechanisms. These intricate networks of channels circulate nutrients, energy, signals, and waste, playing a vital role in maintaining homeostasis; consequently, pathological changes within them lead to various diseases. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to look beyond the literal description of Srotas as physical channels. It seeks to analyze the synonyms found in Ayurvedic texts to understand their diverse contexts, structural nuances, and functional roles, thereby enriching the definition of these entities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A detailed review of Brihatrayi and Laghutrayi with respective available commentaries was conducted to examine the etymological derivation of Srotas and its synonyms. The study analyzes how these terms are applied in specific contexts to interpret their broader biological and energetic implications. RESULTS: The synonyms emphasize the dynamic nature of these channels as conduits for the continuous transport of life-sustaining substances. The analysis reveals that Srotas are not limited to anatomical structures like vessels or ducts; synonyms indicate they also encompass physiological pathways, subtle energy channels, and functional systems that sustain vitality. CONCLUSION: The concept of Srotas is multidimensional, extending beyond simple physical structures. Understanding its various synonyms provides an expanded perspective that bridges the gap between traditional Ayurvedic wisdom and contemporary modern medical science, highlighting Srotas as essential functional systems for life.
