Subjective time is not experienced as a uniform or stable quantity. Moments of threat, uncertainty, or novelty are often reported as temporally expanded, whereas routine and safe contexts are experienced as compressed or rapidly passing. In addition, phenomena such as déjà vu reveal brief but striking disruptions in temporal continuity. Existing accounts largely describe these effects at a phenomenological or correlational level, yet leave unresolved the underlying architectural mechanisms that necessitate such variability.In this paper, time is conceptualized not as a content of consciousness, a sensory modality, or a byproduct of memory, but as a functional interface within conscious architecture. It is proposed that consciousness continuously generates experiential outputs that must be accompanied by mandatory meta-information, including temporal labeling. Within this framework, subjective temporal expansion and compression are explained as variations in the resolution and density of temporal labeling, rather than changes in time itself.The model further distinguishes between physical time, biological timing mechanisms, and consciousness, arguing that consciousness does not function as a clock but as a synchrony monitor that aligns internal biological signals with external temporal structure. From an evolutionary perspective, the time interface is shown to be a direct consequence of finitude: mortal systems require temporally ordered development, prioritization, and adaptive response selection within a limited lifespan.Finally, the framework accounts for both micro-level disruptions, such as déjà vu, as transient breakdowns of temporal synchronization, and macro-level failures observed under conditions of temporal isolation. Together, these findings position time not as a constraint imposed upon consciousness, but as a necessary architectural condition that enables coherent, meaningful, and continuous conscious experience.
