There is the hundred-year emotion war, where one group of theorists believes that emotions are innate and experienced and expressed as discrete categories, and the other believes emotions are constructed with experiences varying between cultures and contexts. Modern approaches, utilising machine learning and big data, promise to overcome the traditionally contrasting perspectives on emotion. Emotion research should integrate physiological, experiential, and behavioural data to gain a comprehensive insight into emotion’s high dimensional characteristics and potentially establish multimodal emotion coherence. This novel methodological framework offers a direction for a significant advancement in emotion science, aiming for a holistic understanding of human emotions.
