The East African region has seen an increase in refugee populations due to conflicts in neighboring countries such as South Sudan and Somalia. This study focuses on how South Africa handles refugees and asylum seekers, providing a comparative perspective with other East African nations. The methodology involves a comparative legal review of refugee laws in South Africa and other selected East African nations, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. Qualitative data from these sources will be analysed for consistency and discrepancies in policies. A key finding is the significant variation in asylum procedures across jurisdictions, with some countries offering more comprehensive support systems than others. The legal landscape of refugees and asylum seekers varies significantly among East African nations, influenced by historical contexts and current political climates. South Africa's approach, while robust, shows room for improvement in aligning policies with international standards. Recommendations include harmonizing asylum procedures across the region to facilitate smoother integration processes and enhance cooperation between countries of origin, transit, and destination.
