The impact of remote learning in the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study of the higher education course in public management at the Federal Institute of Brasília

In 2019, the novel coronavirus emerged and caused a pandemic, bringing many changes to people's lives and generating serious consequences for the population: unemployment, hunger, and, in education, the closure of schools and universities. New teaching strategies were adopted, such as distance learning (DL), for the return of classes in remote periods, using technologies and tools such as Google Meet, among others. The entire school community had to adapt, directly impacting the teaching-learning process. This research investigates the development, from 2021 to 2023, of the Technology in Public Management course at the Instituto Federal de Brasília (IFB), on the Brasília campus. Given this problem, the following research question is posed: what was the impact of remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic on this course? The general objective is to examine the impacts of the pandemic on academic performance in the Technology in Public Management course. The specific objectives are: to describe the remote teaching policies related to the course's educational technologies, to verify changes in students' academic performance, and to analyze their perceptions about the use of technologies. The methodology adopted is qualitative and quantitative, with a descriptive approach; it is a bibliographical research (secondary data) and empirical, through a questionnaire via Google Forms to obtain primary data. The analysis of the results allows a deeper understanding of the impacts of remote teaching and offers information for future research in this area. As a result, it is noted that the pandemic influenced the level of student learning, both positively and negatively.
