The growing environmental impact of packaging waste has accelerated the adoption of sustainable packaging solutions; however, their effectiveness largely depends on consumer awareness and behavior. While technological advancements and regulatory initiatives have improved the availability of sustainable packaging materials, inconsistent consumer understanding and disposal practices continue to undermine environmental outcomes. This study investigates consumer awareness, perception, and behavioral responses toward sustainable packaging from a system-level perspective. Drawing on insights from environmental psychology, consumer behavior theory, and sustainability studies, the research examines key drivers and barriers influencing purchasing and disposal decisions related to sustainable packaging. Using a qualitative, integrative methodology, the paper synthesizes findings from existing empirical studies to analyze how factors such as environmental knowledge, sustainability labeling, trust in green claims, social norms, and perceived convenience shape consumer behavior. The results indicate that although consumers generally express positive attitudes toward sustainable packaging, a persistent attitude–behavior gap limits real-world impact. Clear and standardized labeling, credible sustainability communication, and packaging designs that align with intuitive disposal behaviors significantly improve consumer participation and waste management efficiency. The study highlights that sustainable packaging initiatives must extend beyond material innovation to incorporate behavioral insights and system compatibility. By integrating consumer awareness strategies with packaging design and waste management infrastructure, stakeholders can enhance the environmental effectiveness of sustainable packaging and support long-term circular economy objectives.
