Traditional Medicine Integration within Tanzanian Healthcare Systems: A Policy Analysis

Traditional medicine plays a significant role in healthcare systems across Africa, including Tanzania. Integrating traditional practices into modern health services can improve access and effectiveness of care. A qualitative approach was employed to review existing policies, stakeholder perspectives, and literature related to traditional medicine in Tanzania's healthcare system. Traditional medicine practitioners reported a significant increase (20%) in patient consultations due to the introduction of community-based clinics fostering integration between traditional and modern health services. The findings suggest that integrating traditional medicine into Tanzanian healthcare systems can enhance service delivery, particularly in underserved rural areas. Policy makers should prioritise supporting traditional healers through training programmes and certification to ensure quality care while maintaining cultural continuity.
