Introduction The Scientific Working Group on Model Diagnostics and Evaluation is developing a community-standard approach for diagnostics of Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). The aim of model diagnostics is to better understand model behavior, also through comparison across models. Such diagnostics enhance model transparency, legitimacy and relevance and support the assessment and validation of model-based scenario studies. While several systematic diagnostic studies of IAMs have been conducted (e.g. Kriegler et al., 2015, Harmsen et al, 2021, Dekker et al, 2023), there is currently no consolidated and standardized diagnostic framework, as there is, for instance, for climate models. This pilot diagnostic protocol is intended to develop such a standardized approach. Invitation to all integrated assessment modelling teams We invite all teams to participate in this exercise. We anticipate that this effort will result in a high-level publication based on relatively straightforward, stylized diagnostic scenario runs, in which models are confronted with a common carbon price pathway. Update v1.0 Many teams have registered and provided input. Thanks a lot for your efforts. Comments are processed resulting in a 1.0 version. We now open the database for registration (see section 3.2 in this protocol) and scenario submissions. For all questions, feel free to reach out.
