This study examines the role of African universities in knowledge production and dissemination in Tanzania within the broader field of African studies. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with academics and policymakers, supplemented by a review of relevant literature. University research focused heavily on health and education sectors, accounting for 70% of the thematic content analysed. This knowledge significantly influenced policy decisions in both areas. Tanzanian universities play a crucial role in shaping local and national policies through their research outputs. Policy makers should encourage more interdisciplinary collaboration between Tanzanian universities to address complex societal issues comprehensively.
