The Philosopher and Meaning Machines: On the Production, Tariffing, and Suspension of Meaning

Abstract Modern civilization no longer primarily produces goods or knowledge; it produces meaning. This paper introduces the concept of meaning machines — systemic mechanisms that transform surplus (material, informational, emotional, or existential) into hierarchies of significance. While meaning machines are necessary for large-scale coordination, they inevitably generate tariffs: implicit prices placed on lives, events, and forms of attention. The philosopher’s role is not to create new meanings, but to distinguish, expose, and suspend meaning machines when they claim necessity, innocence, or totality.
