Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Business Practice in South Africa: An Action Research Inquiry

Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in South Africa are seen as a valuable resource for sustainable development, particularly in business contexts where they can provide innovative solutions to traditional challenges. The study employed a qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews with small-scale entrepreneurs and focus group discussions among community leaders. Data was collected over six months through face-to-face interactions and digital surveys. A notable finding is the significant proportion (45%) of participants who reported using traditional knowledge in their business operations, particularly for product development and marketing strategies. The research underscores the importance of recognising and integrating IKS within mainstream business practices to enhance sustainability and innovation. Business educators should incorporate training programmes on IKS into curricula, while policymakers could consider developing incentives for businesses that adopt traditional knowledge in their operations.
