Light-emitting concrete, also called light-transmitting or translucent concrete, is a new construction material that incorporates optical fibers or transparent components in regular concrete enabling one to pass through natural light. This new material has become popular because of its possible energy efficiency and sustainability in construction. Light-emitting concrete allows daylight to enter the building, through structural elements like walls, panels, etc. therefore it decreases the reliance on artificial lighting hence using less energy and carbon emissions. This review paper discusses light-emitting concrete composition, working mechanism, mechanical and optical performance, and sustainability benefits of the concrete. It also speaks about its use in contemporary architecture, intelligent buildings and urban infrastructure. Although there are benefits, including beauty and energy conservation, there are still issues of costs, strength, and scalability. The paper presents the latest achievements in research and pinpoints the areas of further research directed at optimizing the performance of materials and their further application to energy-efficient and sustainable building design.
