This article argues that AI is accelerating automation by lowering the cost of the integration and iteration work that turns tasks into durable systems. When AI is connected to tools, parts of that integration layer become automatable, raising the attempt rate for workflow “insertions.” As successful insertions accumulate, reusable components make subsequent automation cheaper and faster—producing a compounding pattern (“snowballing automation”). Firms often translate these throughput gains into staffing outcomes through headcount stabilization, consolidation, and suppressed replacement hiring. At the labor-market level, the earliest macro-visible signature may be “missing jobs”: a narrowing flow of openings and backfills that weakens mobility before mass layoffs become salient.
