The yrast-band structures of 102 Pd and 106,108 Cd isotopes have been studied within collective and shell-model frameworks. Comparison with experimental excitation energies indicates that the shell-model calculations yield larger root-mean-square deviations, especially for nuclei characterized by higher R 4/2 ratios. In addition, the theoretical energy ratios E(I)/EFormula: see text are analyzed and compared with the predictions of E(5) symmetry.
