The sequencing of Gregor Mendel’s genome in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of his birth marks a historical first; the scientist who founded a major discipline has had that very science applied to himself. The use of ancient DNA (aDNA) to investigate Mendel’s health history provides students an opportunity to explore the related technology and to consider the ethical implications of probing the genomes of famous historical individuals.
