Diabetes mellitus, a global metabolic disorder marked by chronic hyperglycemia, exerts profound effects on multiple organ systems – including the oral cavity. The altered immune response in diabetic individuals creates a favorable environment for opportunistic pathogens, transforming commensal oral microbiota into virulent agents. The diversity on the ecosytem of oral cavity, composed of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, becomes a focus for infections that can significantly compromises the oral and systemic health. These infections, often underestimated, not only compromise the quality of life but may also exacerbate glycemic control, creating a vicious cycle of disease progression. Understanding the bidirectional link between diabetes and oral infections highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, targeted prevention, and effective management. This review explores the complex interplay between diabetes and oral microbial ecology, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary care to mitigate complications and enhance overall patient outcomes.
