Abstract: The evolution of automotive steering systems has seen significant advancementsaimed at improving vehicle maneuverability, stability, and safety. This paper presents a novelapproach to classifying and controlling four-wheel steering (4WS) systems using a Double PoleDouble Throw (DPDT) switch mechanism. The proposed setup enables efficient switchingbetween different steering modes—namely, positive (crab), negative (opposite), and zero(neutral) steering configurations—based on vehicle speed, direction, and maneuveringrequirements. By integrating the DPDT switch with a simplified control circuit and mechanicallinkages, the system ensures synchronized and accurate steering angle adjustments of the frontand rear wheels. This mechanism offers a cost-effective, reliable, and easily implementablesolution for experimental 4WS prototypes and educational demonstrations. The paper alsodiscusses the classification logic, design methodology, functional testing, and performanceevaluation of the proposed system under various driving conditions. The outcome demonstratesenhanced control and responsiveness, making it suitable for both low-speed tight turning andhigh-speed lane-changing scenarios.
