Lay Summary People with central nervous system (CNS) tumors who have pain may be more sensitive to opioid medicines due to side effects like sedation and confusion. Buprenorphine acts on opioid receptors differently that may control pain with fewer cognitive effects, but its use in clinical practice is limited. In this study, we reviewed records of 28 patients with CNS tumors who were prescribed buprenorphine for pain. Most patients experienced pain improvement, and the most common indications were for headache, back pain, and chronic pain. These early findings suggest buprenorphine may be a promising pain treatment for this population.
