Developing computational literacy in Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology students is important for the next generation of scientists to participate in new and exciting scientific fields. “Big data” fields (fields where the amount of data is too large to be analyzed with Excel) such as bioinformatics, computational biophysics, protein design and even the analysis of next generation sequencing methods all rely on computational skills. PyBMB is a community of educators with the goal of enhancing computational literacy among faculty and students in biochemistry-related fields. PyBMB is developing workshops to (1) teach faculty to utilize online resources such as GitHub and Google Colab, (2) to teach faculty members basic coding skills in Python or R and how to use AI tools to build robust educational exercises, and (3) to teach them how to introduce coding to students in their teaching and research. Here, we present our progress toward developing the workshop series. We invite interested faculty to join the PyBMB community through our Slack channel (pybmb.slack.com), website (sites.wabash.edu/pybmb/), and LinkedIn group (www.linkedin.com/groups/13200020/), which can be joined by email request.
