Olaolu Olabintan et al. Environmental impact of computer-aided diagnosis in colonoscopy: a carbon footprint assessment of a prospective study cohort Although artificial intelligence systems are developed to improve efficiency, the environmental impact of their use is unknown. In this analysis of 1134 patients undergoing colonoscopy with a leave-in-situ strategy, the use of computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) produced 0.10 kgCO 2 eq more than colonoscopy without CADx. Further work is required to establish the impact of these emerging technologies on the carbon footprint of colonoscopy. Article published online: 20 February 2026 © 2026. Thieme. All rights reserved.
