Background: Post-transfusion purpura (PTP) is an uncommon complication of transfusion. It occurs as a result of a patient developing alloantibodies to the human platelet antigen (HPA) expressed on platelets following sensitisation from either blood product transfusion or during pregnancy. The most common blood product implicated in PTP is red cells, but it can also develop after platelet and plasma transfusions. The antibody most frequently detected in PTP is anti-HPA-1a. Other HPA antibodies are less common.
