ABSTRACT Green innovation has emerged as an urgent tool of reducing environmental effects and maintaining competitiveness in the long run in response to increasing demands on the sustainability of the environment, especially in terms of resource depletion, emissions, and industrial waste. This paper is an investigation into the factors and consequences of the adoption of green innovation in the Chinese furniture sector, which is a fast growing and emissions‐intensive industry, particularly in reference to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Survey data were sampled in 336 furniture manufacturing companies in the key Chinese manufacturing areas. Construct reliability and validity were determined and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM) was used to analyze the proposed model. The findings indicate that all the presumed relationships are positive and statistically significant. The perceived behavioral control becomes the strongest predictor of the intention to adopt and the actual adoption, and the role of organizational readiness, technological capability, and availability of resources are emphasized. The social norms also have a substantial impact, which demonstrates the stakeholder and supply‐chain pressure, and the role of attitudes is also supportive but relatively less influential. The intention to adopt is a significant predictor of actual adoption and, therefore, proves the main assumption of TPB. In general, the results indicate that firm‐level behavioral drivers are transformed into better environmental performance, and the results can provide the industry‐specific understanding of sustainable industrial change in China.
