Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has predicted that the “centaur phase” of human-AI collaborationin the software industry will be “very brief,” drawing on the chess analogy where machines eventuallysurpassed human-AI teams. This Viewpoint argues that the analogy fails because chess is a closed systemwhile software development is an open one. Synthesizing a cross-disciplinary survey of 37 empiricalstudies (500,000+ developers) with experimental evidence on AI metacognitive limitations, I show thatthe organizational productivity ceiling created by AI coding tools is structural, not temporary: half ofthe identified dissipation mechanisms involve premise-defining tasks that current architectures cannotperform alone. The centaur does not die uniformly—it stratifies into layers where AI operates alone,where humans oversee AI, and where humans lead with AI amplification. This framework applies toevery industry adopting AI for cognitive labor.
