The article is devoted to the essence of passenger flow, the mechanisms of its formation, and the issues of its study on a scientific basis. The acceleration of modern urbanization processes, the increase in population density, and the growing complexity of transport infrastructure make accurate analysis and forecasting of passenger flows essential. Passenger flow is one of the key indicators that determine the efficiency of the transport system, the optimization of timetables, the proper distribution of carrying capacity, and the assurance of socio-economic development. The article explains the concept of passenger flow within the context of transport science and systematizes its main types, including daily, seasonal, and peak-hour flows, as well as flow patterns differentiated by direction. The factors influencing the formation of passenger flow—such as population size and spatial distribution, the location of employment and educational centers, the structure of the transport network, tariff policy, social behavior, and the level of urbanization—are analyzed in a comprehensive manner. The study provides a detailed discussion of the methods used to examine passenger flows. These methods include statistical observation, surveys and questionnaire techniques, automated counting systems, analysis of ticket sales data, digital technologies, and modeling approaches. Particular emphasis is placed on the expansion of opportunities for real-time monitoring and forecasting of passenger flows as a result of the application of information and communication technologies. The article also highlights the practical significance of accurately studying passenger flows. This is crucial for improving route networks, optimally selecting the number and capacity of vehicles, regulating service intervals, reducing congestion, and enhancing passenger comfort. Ultimately, the scientific study of passenger flows is regarded as a decisive factor in the formation of a sustainable transport system and in improving the quality of urban life.
