This is a systematic review that shows that community-based Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), based on indigenous and local knowledge systems, are critical in promoting resilience to climate and ecosystem recovery, as well as sustainable human well-being. Peer-reviewed literature demonstrates that peer-reviewed evidence indicates that traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) provides context-dependent, cost-effective, and ecologically consistent approaches to dealing with complex socio-environmental issues. Phytoremediation, plant-based water treatment, and traditional agricultural uses add to the fertility of the soil, alleviation of pollution, better nutrition, and biodiversity preservation and social unity is provided by the safeguarding of the sacred landscapes and traditional authority of resources. Moreover, community green areas, wetland rehabilitation, and urban forestry does not only promote ecological restoration but also provide quantifiable co-benefits to the health of the people including decreased instances of vector-borne diseases, better ambient and water quality and increased well-being.
