Background: The developmental origins of health and disease explain how early life exposures influence long-term health outcomes. However, there are several knowledge gaps that hinder the understanding of the complex relationship between maternal nutrition and foetal development in Africa. Aim: To bring together current evidence on how insufficient maternal nutrition impacts developmental programming and pregnancy results, offering fresh perspectives on mechanisms, interventions and directions for future research. Methods: Scientific information reviewed for this purpose was obtained from Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science and the African Journals Online. Results: Studies have reported that maternal nutrition is a critical determinant for developmental programming and pregnancy outcomes. It has a far-reaching impact, affecting not only the immediate health of the mother and foetus but also the long-term development and well-being of the child. Poor maternal nutrition may impact foetal development, causing reduced foetal growth and increasing the risk of metabolic disorders in offspring, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. It can cause changes in blood vessel structure and function, reduce placental blood flow, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, and impair foetal organ development. Neurodevelopmental disorders and impaired immune system dysfunction might also occur. To address poor nutrition among pregnant women, a multifaceted approach is required, including nutrition education, counselling, prenatal supplements, food fortification and community-based interventions. Conclusions: Regular assessment and evaluation of programme outcomes can help identify areas of improvement and allow for adjustments to enhance the effectiveness of interventions.
