The phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of bacteria Staphylococcus cohnii VKM B-3165 were studied. Strain S. cohnii VKM B-3165 exhibited high susceptibility to antibiotics from different classes, cationic antimicrobial peptides, bacteriocins, and bacteriocin-like substances produced by coagulase-negative staphylococci. Analysis of its genome did not reveal genes responsible for antibiotic resistance or virulence. The absence of the mprF gene and its product along with the presence of a non-coding dltA pseudogene suggest that this strain is unable to regulate its cell surface charge. This explains its high sensitivity to cationic antibacterial peptide compounds. Based on our results, S. cohnii VKM B-3165 represents a promising indicator strain for screening and characterization of new cationic antibacterial compounds and bacteriocins. The genome of S. cohnii VKM B-3165 has been deposited at the NCBI GenBank (accession number: GCA₀50171255. 1).
