For people who survive a stroke, the primary location for rehabilitation is commonly the home environment and surrounding community. A supportive environment is essential to promote independence, well-being and participation in society. This systematic scoping review summarizes findings from 47 articles describing home environment features and public space that support or hinder life after stroke. Findings from these articles were grouped into four themes 1) adapting to environments; 2) transitioning between home and public space; 3) engaging in meaningful and everyday activities; and 4) technology in the Home are presented on a microsystem (home) and macrosystem (public space/neighborhood) level. The interdependencies between the macro- and microsystem provide valuable insights into what is required to allow people with stroke to recover successfully. This theoretical contribution offers practical guidelines for improving life post-stroke through a more nuanced understanding of the interplay between individual needs and environmental influences.
