We isolated a rare allele of TabZIP45-4B that tolerated nitrogen starvation by pooling gene allele frequency quantification. The knock out of TabZIP45-4B enhances spike number and grain yield per plant in wheat under nitrogen starvation conditions through downregulating the expression level of TaDWARF4. Introgression the rare allele into modern commercial cultivar improved multiple agronomic traits with little nitrogen input.
