Abstract There has long been historiographical confusion about the date of the Battle of Myton. This reflects the different dates offered by the chronicle accounts that describe the battle: the Bridlington Abbey Chronicle, followed by the Meaux Abbey Chronicle, states that it occurred on 12 September 1319, while ‘Trokelowe’ gives 20 September 1319. This note argues that the former date should be preferred, on the basis that it is given by chronicles that appear to have been better informed about northern affairs, and that it is consistent with the siege of Berwick being abandoned on 17 September because of the battle.
