There are many renewable energy resources in Nigeria suitable for power generation. An important energy source is the tidal current from the flow of water bodies, due to its geographical location to the Atlantic. However, harnessing this renewable energy resource in a viable manner with minimal environmental impact and economic cost is very crucial. A method of harnessing the tidal energy from water bodies with Lagos lagoon as a case study, which has the potential to play valuable role in sustainable energy, is presented. The low tidal head hydroturbine is the mechanism used to investigate the energy that can be harnessed from the low-velocity tidal current, due to the geomorphology of the Lagos lagoon. Considering a tidal energy technology that maximises the conversion process, reducing losses and optimising power generation. Results obtained from study show that turbine power of 400–450 kW per day can be developed using a single hydroturbine. This study contributes to technological advancement and development by providing meaningful insights to engineers and scientists involved with energy generation/integration aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability.
