Abstract This case study provides a practical guide for calculating the production of ryegrass per hectare at two stages of maturity (21 and 35 days), as well as its conservation and subsequent use as hay on the farm. It examines the impact of ryegrass on sheep nutrition. The guide demonstrates how to estimate the amount of forage produced per hectare, along with methods for determining the kilograms of dry matter per hectare (kg DM/ha) and its moisture content. It also outlines the practical steps for preparing ryegrass hay at both maturity stages. Additionally, the study offers a straightforward approach for calculating the daily intake of ryegrass hay by growing lambs, taking into account their metabolic liveweight. It explains how this information can be utilized to estimate the intake of key nutrients, including dry matter, organic matter, total protein, rumen degradable protein, and metabolizable energy per animal. Overall, this data serves as a valuable guide for farmers to make informed decisions regarding the use of ryegrass hay and its effects based on the maturity status of the plant.
