Introduction: Anupana is an essential Ayurvedic concept that serves as a vehicle (Sahapana) to facilitate the proper assimilation of food and medicine. It not only improves palatability but also enhances therapeutic efficacy. Different Anupanas are prescribed based on the individual’s body constitution (~Prakriti), the nature of the disease, and the properties of the medicine or food consumed. Aim & Objectives: To explore the concept, significance, and therapeutic benefits of Anupana in Ayurveda. Materials & Methods: Review of classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, modern literature and research articles. Discussion: Anupana is a medium consumed with food or medicine to aid digestion, absorption, and effectiveness. It is classified into various types based on properties, season, disease conditions, and individual constitution. Clinically, Anupana is integral in therapies such as Panchakarma for detoxification and Rasayana for rejuvenation, with specific substances like buttermilk recommended for digestive issues, honey for respiratory conditions, and ghee for neurological disorders. Understanding and appropriately applying Anupana is crucial for optimizing Ayurvedic treatments and achieving better health outcomes. Conclusion: Anupana is a fundamental concept in Ayurveda that plays a crucial role in enhancing drug action, digestion, and overall health. Understanding its pharmacological significance can help in the effective application of Ayurvedic treatments.
