This research report presents design recommendations for the development of educational video games addressing systemic crises. Synthesizing findings from recent meta-analyses on digital game-based learning (DGBL), empirical studies on attitude change, and a systematic review of serious games developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the report evaluates the efficacy of various gameplay mechanics and educational approaches. It examines how specific features—such as perspective-taking, agent-based modeling, and meaningful feedback—can facilitate cognitive learning. The resulting recommendations present design principles that enhance learner engagement, support knowledge retention, and foster critical thinking. Finally, this report can serve as an evidence-supported roadmap for developers and educators seeking to utilize serious games as effective tools for navigating complex global challenges.
