Bridges have a significant impact on the identity and survival of islands. An island to mainland bridge (IMB) may influence the island’s sense of identity, but it can also enhance tourism and generate economic income, producing complex and diverse socio-economic and cultural effects. In Sinan County, Jeollanam-do, fixed bridges have been constructed since 2008, gradually connecting the islands to the mainland. This study examines the relationship between changes in land-use spatial patterns and socio-economic transformations before and after the construction of major fixed bridges in Sinan County. Jido Island, which was connected to the mainland in the 1970s, and Aphae Island, where the local government office is located, have shown consistent spatial pattern trends. In contrast, Jeungdo Island, which was connected relatively early in 2010, belongs to a group that has experienced limited social and economic development despite being physically connected. The effects of bridge connections vary by region, and in some cases, they appear to have long-term negative consequences.
