This research reports on the motivations of users of privately owned e-rideables in Greater Perth, WA. Drawing on an intercept survey (conducted in May 2024) and an experiential survey (conducted in March 2025), the research aimed to discover usage patterns of these devices and other reasons for their use, to fill a knowledge gap in this area. Both surveys offered similar findings that e-rideables are primarily used by middle-aged males, with distinct patterns emerging between weekdays and weekends. Commuting is the main purpose for those travelling towards the Perth CBD, with more than 90% of the e-riders using an e-scooter. Most trips were door-to-door, limiting travel distances to an average of approximately 6-8 km and trip durations to an average of 20 min. Respondents primarily used e-rideables for convenience, environmental factors and enjoyment (being outdoors). It was found that the adoption of these sustainable transport behaviours was influenced by attitudes and environmental values. Speed differences between e-riders and other shared path users were a substantial concern for many e-riders, and more separated paths and the ability to carry e-rideables on public transport could further encourage their usage.
