Abstract This paper evaluates the sustainability performance of Bangladesh’s key seaports—Chittagong, Mongla, and Payra—within the context of global sustainability standards. The study adopts a comprehensive approach, analysing the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of port sustainability. While significant economic growth has been driven by increased cargo handling, major challenges persist, including inconsistent data on Mongla Port’s cargo handling. From an environmental perspective, the ports struggle with inadequate waste management and wastewater treatment systems. Socially, Chittagong Port faces deficiencies in workforce training and safety standards. Economically, the study assesses port performance by examining cargo throughput, ship handling, and container handling. The research draws on a thorough review of over 120 articles to establish a framework for assessing port sustainability and compares Bangladeshi ports with global sustainability standards. The study proposes recommendations aimed at enhancing infrastructure, adopting green policies, and improving social welfare. By addressing these areas, Bangladesh’s ports can evolve into sustainable economic hubs that strike a balance between growth and environmental and social responsibilities.
