To examine how aging and sex affect corneal nerve density and function.
Assess the sensory corneal neuropathy in aging models
Compare nerve density between male and female mice
Evaluate sensory abnormalities and neuroinflammation levels
Aging is linked to increased sensory corneal neuropathy
Altered sensory function was observed with age
Female mice show less nerve degeneration compared to male mice
Abstract
Aging was associated with sensory corneal neuropathy, altered sensory abnormalities, and neuroinflammation. Interestingly, female mice appeared to be protected from nerve degeneration compared to males.
