Rogue waves appear in numerous physical areas, including coupled nonlinear systems. Rogue wave ‘volume’ is an emerging concept in the study of rogue waves. Here, we explore the notion of the rogue wave ‘volume’ definition to study the multi-component rogue waves of the three-component long wave- short wave resonant interaction system of Newell form. This volume can be used to determine the internal solution parameters from experimental data, as these can be numerically integrated. The volume mainly depends on one eigenvalue. • Relevant rogue wave ‘volume’ is defined to study the multi-component rogue waves. • The ‘volume’ can be used to infer solution parameters. • Bounded rogue wave volumes in coupled long wave–short wave resonant interaction model of Newell type are found. • Obtained results are generic and are valid for focusing, defocusing and focusing–defocusing type nonlinearities.
