This study is dedicated to Josef Klička (1855–1937), an important organist, composer, teacher, and a native of Klatovy. Based on an analysis of family correspondence, the author maps the composer’s life, focusing especially on the so-far neglected period of his studies at the prestigious Prague Conservatory in 1867–1870 and his dramatic departure from the school during the third year of studies. These events that took place during his stay in Prague have been reconstructed based on the surviving correspondence of Josef Klička, his parents, siblings, other relatives, and family friends, and they are set within a wider context of the history of everyday life in the 19th century.
