Abstract General surgery has undergone transformative changes driven by technological innovations, evolving surgical paradigms, and persistent global disparities in education and practice. This review synthesizes contemporary developments in general surgery, with a focus on integrating innovation into surgical education and clinical practice. While these technologies offer improved precision and outcomes, they present significant challenges: educational curricula struggle to keep pace with rapid innovation, cognitive demands on surgeons increase, and resource disparities between high-income and low-middle income countries widen. The shift from radical resection to minimally invasive and function-preserving techniques exemplifies the changing surgical philosophy, emphasizing personalized patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration. Concurrently, surgical education is transitioning toward competency-based frameworks to better prepare trainees for modern practice. Geographical disparities highlight stark contrasts between well-resourced training systems and regions relying on task-shifting strategies. International collaborations and tele-education initiatives offer promising solutions to bridge gaps. Emerging ethical concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) accountability and data privacy necessitate curriculum updates. We propose the “ADAPT” framework for future surgical education, emphasizing AI literacy, Digital communication, Autonomous learning, Patient-centered care, and Technological integration with humanistic values. Addressing these challenges requires global standardization, equitable resource distribution, and sustained collaboration between educators and clinicians to align training with evolving practice.
