Between 2014 and 2024, more than 516,000 people died by suicide, with 2022 marking the year with the highest number of deaths recorded in a single year, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) analysis published Feb. 24. Though the total number of suicides has dipped slightly since then, patterns differ by method: suicides involving firearms have continued to rise, reaching a record level in 2024. Consequently, firearms were involved in 57% of all suicide deaths in 2024, compared with 50% in 2014, even as suicides by other means declined, the analysis stated.
