Abstract Tourism is a service-oriented industry where the competence and professionalism of tourism practitioners significantly influence visitor satisfaction and destination reputation. As tourism destinations become increasingly competitive, the development of a qualified tourism workforce becomes essential. This chapter presents a reflective academic discussion based on the author’s experience as an Accredited Competency Assessor for Tourism Promotion Services NC II under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority from 2016 to 2023. Drawing from competency assessment practices conducted in TESDA-accredited assessment centers across CALABARZON and the National Capital Region, the chapter explores the structure and implementation of competency-based certification in tourism. The study examines the assessment procedures, competency standards, and evaluation systems used to determine candidate readiness for professional tourism roles. It also reflects on how competency-based assessment contributes to tourism workforce development and professional standards in the tourism and hospitality industry. By documenting these experiences, this chapter highlights the role of competency-based certification in strengthening tourism professionalism and supporting sustainable tourism development.
