This research aims to compare the effectiveness and safety of combined methotrexate and short-term corticosteroids versus prolonged corticosteroids alone in patients with bullous pemphigoid.
Conducted as a multicentre, noninferiority randomized clinical trial.
Participants received either combined treatment or prolonged corticosteroids.
Evaluated treatment outcomes based on survival and relapse rates.
Combined treatment with methotrexate maintains survival rates comparable to prolonged corticosteroids.
It is associated with a lower risk of relapse during treatment.
However, there is an increased risk of toxicity with the combined approach.
Abstract
Maintenance therapy with low-dose MTX is non-inferior to prolonged STS in terms of survival and is associated with a reduced risk of relapse, at the cost of increased toxicity.
