Hand grip strength and loss of independence in indigenous and non-Indigenous New Zealand octogenarians–the LiLACS NZ cohort study
Key Points
Evaluate the relationship between hand grip strength and independence in octogenarians, considering differences in indigeneity and sex.
Cohort study design involving octogenarians from New Zealand
Assessment of hand grip strength as a potential screening tool
Comparison of independence trajectories between indigenous and non-Indigenous groups
Hand grip strength correlates with independence levels in octogenarians.
Variations in strength and independence are observed between indigenous and non-Indigenous participants.
Abstract
Hand grip strength could be a valuable screening tool to assess independence trajectory in octogenarians, but further study is needed to clarify the effects of indigeneity and sex in this population.
